Wayne as described here refers to the area within the 19087 area code which includes the town of Wayne and neighboring towns of Radnor, St. Davids and Strafford. Wayne is the largest of all Main Line towns, both in area and population. The center of town is the corner of route 30 and Wayne Avenue. There are shops and restaurants from the middle of town in either direction on Route 30 and also on various side streets. There is a movie theater close to the city center and the historic Wayne train station is a block away on Wayne Ave. There is also a hotel in Wayne. The center of Wayne was designated as an historic district in 2012. The town is lively, with plenty of foot traffic in the good weather, without being noisy or congested.
The town was originally named Louella, after founder J. Henry Askin's daughters Louisa and Ella. It was renamed Wayne after General Anthony Wayne in 1880 when Askin's and surrounding land were purchased.
Children living in Wayne can attend the public schools of Radnor Township, ranked 19th out of 553 districts in the state, Tredyffrin Township, ranked 6th, or Upper Merion, ranked 125th, depending on where they live within Wayne. They could also choose to attend one of the numerous private schools located in the area.
As mentioned, there is plenty of shopping to be had within Wayne. There are Giant, Acme, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's supermarkets. The Lancaster County Farmer's Market, actually located in Delaware County in Strafford, began in 1933 and is one of the largest and best known in the area. Fine dining restaurants abound including: Georges', the Main Line outpost of renowned chef George Perrier; Margaret Kuo's, featuring the distinctive chinese cuisine of well-known restaurateur Margaret Kuo; and the White Dog Cafe, a highly regarded restaurant in Philadelphia for many years that recently opened a branch in Wayne. World-class shopping is 10 minutes away at King of Prussia mall. Of course Philadelphia, with all it has to offer in the way of cultural and sporting events and a vibrant restaurant scene is within 45 minutes by train or car.
